The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is set to enhance its road patrols starting this weekend, aiming to ensure safe driving practices during the upcoming spring break and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. From March 8 through March 17, the Texas Highway Patrol (THP) will implement its annual traffic enforcement campaign targeting speeding, seat belt violations, driving under the influence, and other infractions.
"Spring break brings more travelers to Texas and making sure our roads are safe has to be a top priority," stated Colonel Freeman F. Martin. He urged drivers heading to various destinations like beaches or lakes to make smart choices by avoiding drinking and driving, wearing seat belts, and staying off their phones while driving.
The THP's increased enforcement efforts fall under Operation CARE (Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort), which is a nationwide initiative running from March 8 through March 17. In last year’s campaign during spring break and St. Patrick’s Day in 2024, DPS issued over 52,793 citations and warnings including more than 16,360 for speeding violations; 1,277 for seat belt and child seat violations; 2,149 for driving without insurance; along with 463 felony and fugitive arrests.
DPS also highlights the importance of vigilance within communities as people gather for parades and festivals. They encourage reporting suspicious activities via their program using the iWatch mobile app or by calling a dedicated hotline. Reports are confidential but not intended for emergencies; in such cases, calling 911 is advised.
Furthermore, DPS emphasizes being alert for signs of human trafficking due to increased travel activity on roads and at airports. The public is encouraged to report any potential indicators of human trafficking either directly through law enforcement channels or via the National Human Trafficking Hotline.
