U.S. Senator John Cornyn addressed the Senate floor to commend the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) for its role in identifying and eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse within federal government spending. He noted that these issues have historically been bipartisan concerns.
Cornyn referenced past efforts like the Grace Commission, emphasizing that under President Trump and with Elon Musk's leadership, significant progress has been made in addressing these financial inefficiencies. He highlighted specific cases uncovered by DOGE, including illegal immigrants using multiple Social Security numbers to submit Medicare claims and an individual with an arrest warrant receiving over $100,000 in loans from the Small Business Administration.
The senator pointed out other questionable expenditures identified by DOGE, such as funds allocated to alpaca farming in Peru through the Inter-American Foundation and investments aimed at improving the marketability of mushrooms and peas in Guatemala. Cornyn remarked on the absurdity of these expenses, questioning their necessity given taxpayer funding.
Despite resistance from those benefiting from what he termed a "gravy train," Cornyn expressed gratitude towards Elon Musk for his contributions to this initiative. "I’d like to do something that you don’t hear very often here in D.C. these days and thank Elon Musk for his service to our country in performing this essential and long-overdue role," he stated.
