Austin, TX – On August 10, Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin) urged Austin veterans who were exposed to toxic substances and may be eligible for expanded VA health care and benefits under the PACT Act to file a claim—or submit an intent to file—by August 14, 2023, to receive benefits backdated to August 10, 2022.

“We must deliver for our servicemembers as they delivered for us,” said Rep. Doggett. “While there’s no deadline for veterans to submit a PACT Act claim, if filed by August 14, benefits can be backdated to 2022. I strongly encourage eligible Austin veterans exposed to toxic substances during active duty to take advantage of this extension.”

Rep. Doggett voted to pass the PACT Act last year, which makes nearly 3.5 million veterans across the country eligible for the care and benefits they earned. The legislation ensures eligibility for benefits for veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, Gulf War toxins, and radiation.

Due to a high volume of claims, some veterans have received error messages when submitting an intent to file PACT Act claims. The VA has confirmed that even if this message is received, the agency has logged the claim and saved the effective date for benefits.

Veterans and their families can find more information on PACT Act benefits by visiting VA.gov/pact or calling 1-800-698-2411 (TTY: 711).
