Governor Greg Abbott today held a meeting with the President of the Republic of Hungary Katalin Novák and other Hungarian leaders to discuss strengthening and expanding the international economic partnership between Texas and Hungary. Held at the Governor's Mansion in Austin, this was President Novák’s first official visit to Texas and her first meeting with Governor Abbott.
The City of Austin will require composting collection at all multifamily communities starting in October 2024. The Austin City Council unanimously approved the amendment to the Universal Recycling Ordinance (URO) at its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023.
Richard McHale was appointed Austin Resource Recovery (ARR) Director by Austin Interim City Manager Jesús Garza on September 8, 2023. McHale has been serving as Interim Director for the department since former Director Ken Snipes was reassigned to the City’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) in March. Snipes was later appointed as the Director of HSEM.

Governor Greg Abbott today announced 14 Fund for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) grants totaling over $3.6 million were awarded to 11 organizations in the Panhandle and Concho Valley area as part of the Texas Veterans Commission's (TVC) Big Check Tour. Presented today by TVC, the funding will provide services to more than 3,100 Texas veterans and their families across 60 counties in the FVA Panhandle region.
Yesterday, the Austin City Council voted to appropriate a $22.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) for its Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program. This marks a key milestone for Austin Transportation and Public Works Department (TPW) to begin developing and implementing grant-funded traffic safety projects across the city. The Council also appropriated some City funds from the Fiscal Year 2023 budget as part of the required local match for the grant.
