Governor Greg Abbott extended his congratulations to the City of Freeport for being named a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community. This designation, awarded by Travel Texas, marks the city's commitment to enhancing tourism as a strategy for economic growth and job creation.

“Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies, supporting one in 11 jobs across Texas,” said Governor Abbott. “Travelers to and within Texas generate more than $193.8 billion in annual economic impact and support 1.3 million jobs across the state. Every region of this great state offers endless opportunities to experience the natural beauty, rich history, and true Texas hospitality that draws visitors to our communities."

Tim Fennell, Director of Travel Texas, highlighted Freeport's attractions: “Freeport's recognition as a Tourism Friendly Texas Community reflects its coastal heritage and array of recreational activities.” He noted that visitors can enjoy deep-sea fishing excursions, explore historical sites like the Freeport Historical Museum, or engage in water sports on the Old Brazos River.

State Senator Joan Huffman expressed her enthusiasm about Freeport's new status: “As a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community, the City of Freeport offers unique experiences that only a few places in the state can rival.”

Representative Jeff Barry praised Freeport’s offerings: “From the banks of Oyster Creek to the Gulf of America, Freeport has an abundance of attractions for visitors to enjoy.”

Representative Cody Vasut also commended the city: “Freeport is a wonderful place to visit: good food, diverse recreation opportunities, and great people.”

City Manager Lance Petty credited community collaboration for this achievement: “This certification is well deserved thanks to our staff, board, city residents, and business partners.”

Wade Dillion from the Freeport Historical Museum added insight into its historical significance: “Seated beside the Brazos River along the beautiful Texas coast... Migratory birds call Freeport home while nestled beside quiet fishermen.”

The Tourism Friendly Texas Community program invites local governments or non-profit organizations leading tourism efforts to apply for certification. Benefits include fostering relationships crucial for tourism development and educating leaders on tourism's importance.

Travel Texas aims at marketing Texas as a premier travel destination both nationally and internationally through various initiatives aimed at boosting economic development by increasing non-Texan travel into the state.
