Governor Greg Abbott has instructed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to deploy additional state emergency response resources due to anticipated critical wildfire danger in West Texas and persistent fire weather conditions across much of the state.
“The State of Texas continues to monitor the heightened wildfire threats that are impacting large portions of the state,” said Governor Abbott. “Due to the unpredictable nature of wildfires, I directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to ready additional emergency response resources to assist local communities with any wildfire outbreaks. With dry conditions, wind gusts, and low humidity increasing wildfire danger, Texans are encouraged to make an emergency plan, limit any activities that can cause a spark, and heed the guidance of local officials to keep yourself and your family safe.”
The Texas A&M Forest Service reports that dry fuels, strong winds, and low humidity will likely increase wildfire risks statewide. Extremely critical conditions are expected in regions such as the High Plains, South Plains, Permian Basin, Big Country, Texoma, Metroplex, and Hill Country. The potential for a Southern Plains Wildfire Outbreak tomorrow is being monitored under current forecasts.
The National Weather Service predicts continued elevated fire dangers over several days. The Wildland Fire Preparedness Level remains at Level 3 due to ongoing drought conditions affecting multiple regions.
The Texas State Emergency Operations Center (SOC) is on Level II activation as it supports local responses. Over 750 state responders with more than 300 pieces of equipment from 16 agencies have been mobilized under Governor Abbott's directive.
Key resources prepared include firefighting personnel and equipment from the Texas A&M Forest Service; helicopters from the Texas National Guard; medical task forces; patrol support from state troopers; game wardens; urban search teams; agricultural support agents; utility monitoring staff; environmental quality monitors; information service personnel; and more.
Texans are advised to adopt preventive measures against wildfires by avoiding spark-inducing activities and maintaining emergency preparedness plans. Further information can be accessed at TexasReady.gov or tdem.texas.gov/prepare.
Governor Abbott remains committed to providing resources for community support against wildfires by urging damage reporting through TDEM’s online tool and enhancing readiness levels across affected areas.
