The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation has advanced Steven Bradbury's nomination for U.S. Deputy Secretary of Transportation to a full Senate vote. Chaired by Senator Ted Cruz, the committee approved Bradbury with 15 votes in favor and 13 against.
In addition to Bradbury's nomination, the committee also reviewed the promotion of Coast Guard Lieutenant Samuel Hafensteiner to Lieutenant Commander, which was reported favorably.
During the session, Senator Cruz addressed concerns regarding recent aviation incidents across several states and emphasized the importance of having knowledgeable officials at the Department of Transportation. He stated that "it's essential for the Department of Transportation to have officials who understand the systems they are tasked with managing."
Cruz highlighted Bradbury's past experience as General Counsel of DOT, noting his understanding of transportation systems and safety challenges. "Mr. Bradbury is also a forward-thinking and receptive leader," said Cruz. He acknowledged concerns about external influences at DOT but supported openness to new ideas for efficiency improvements.
Cruz further discussed infrastructure priorities, mentioning that newer cars are safer but expensive due to regulations. He expressed support for federal funding directed toward projects offering significant benefits per dollar spent.
Senators and leaders from America's transportation community have shown support for Bradbury's nomination as it moves forward in the legislative process.
