Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Special Agents, as part of Operation Lone Star, arrested two criminal illegal immigrants from Mexico in Hidalgo County over the weekend. The arrests took place after an incident involving gunfire.
On Sunday, February 23, at 9:00 a.m., a DPS Special Agent conducting surveillance heard gunshots and observed a man with a handgun outside a residence on Minnesota Road in Mission. When approached by DPS Special Agents, Hugo Alberto Lopez Herrera, 47, attempted to flee into the residence and resisted arrest. Another individual, Hugo Alberto Lopez Piedra, 21, tried to prevent the apprehension of Lopez Herrera by grabbing one of the agents and also resisted arrest. A Ruger 9mm handgun and 46 spent bullet casings were found outside the residence.
Lopez Herrera faces charges including deadly conduct, possession of a firearm by a felon, and resisting arrest. Lopez Piedra is charged with resisting arrest and interfering with public duties.
