Governor Greg Abbott addressed the Texas Public Policy Foundation’s annual Texas Policy Summit in Austin, emphasizing the benefits of school choice for all Texas families. During his keynote speech, he countered criticism from opponents of school choice, stating that they resist change because it disrupts their control over education.

“The reality is that those who are entrenched in the status quo do not believe in school choice because it disrupts the monopoly that they have on education,” said Governor Abbott. He asserted that opposition to school choice stems from a reluctance to lose this control and accused critics of misrepresenting facts. “Those anti-school choice, they’re going to fight to the very end to discourage members to vote in favor of school choice. But you can tell that we are winning. You can tell that the fight is over because there is a process that shows you the end is near. That is when your opponents have nothing else to resort to other than lying about the facts.”

Abbott outlined several points regarding a universal school choice program in Texas: public education funding will remain intact; every family, regardless of region or background, will have access; per-student funding has reached an unprecedented level exceeding $15,000; and homeschooling parents will retain curriculum control.

In addition to discussing education, Abbott reiterated his focus on property tax reform, advocating for measures requiring two-thirds voter approval for tax increases. He also highlighted ongoing border security efforts and pledged continued collaboration with the Trump Administration to enhance these measures for long-term effectiveness.

Governor Abbott has designated school choice as an emergency item for this legislative session following his State of the State Address earlier this month.

The Texas Policy Summit serves as a platform for legislators, activists, media personnel, and stakeholders to engage in discussions on significant state and national issues affecting Texans and Americans alike.
