The U.S. Senate has confirmed Howard Lutnick as the Secretary of Commerce with a vote of 51 yeas to 45 nays. This decision follows the advancement of his nomination by the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, chaired by Senator Ted Cruz, which voted 16–12 in favor.
Senator Cruz expressed strong support for Lutnick's confirmation during his remarks on the Senate floor. He highlighted Lutnick's resilience and life experiences, noting that "Mr. Lutnick has demonstrated great resilience and grit throughout his life." Cruz pointed out that Lutnick overcame personal adversity early in life and went on to rebuild Cantor Fitzgerald after losing two-thirds of its staff on September 11, including his brother.
Lutnick's commitment to supporting families affected by 9/11 through the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund was also emphasized by Cruz. As Secretary of Commerce, Lutnick is expected to lead efforts in expanding commercial access to mid-band spectrum and promoting manufacturing in America.
Cruz noted that nearly 50 organizations have endorsed Lutnick's nomination, highlighting broad support from sectors such as agriculture, aviation, broadband, and manufacturing. The Wireless Association praised Lutnick’s potential leadership at the Department of Commerce: "Mr. Lutnick’s leadership will bring a fresh, innovative approach."
In conclusion, Senator Cruz urged his colleagues to back Lutnick's nomination for a forward-looking approach focused on job creation at the Department of Commerce.
