Steven Bradbury, nominated by President Donald Trump for the role of Deputy Secretary at the Department of Transportation (DOT), appeared before the Senate Commerce Committee to outline his priorities. During his hearing, Bradbury emphasized his dedication to safety, efficiency, and regulatory reform within the department.
Responding to a query from Senator Cruz regarding air travel safety, Bradbury stressed the importance of modernizing air traffic control systems and enhancing training for air traffic controllers. "We need to bring resources to bear immediately," he stated. He highlighted the need for updated technical systems and more efficient upgrade processes.
When asked by Senator Blackburn about national security concerns over Chinese products, particularly electric vehicles (EVs), due to data collection risks, Bradbury acknowledged these issues as both national security and economic concerns. "This is a real serious concern," he said, pointing out potential subsidies from the Chinese government that could undermine U.S. industries.
Addressing Senator Schmitt's inquiry on streamlining NEPA processes for infrastructure projects, Bradbury agreed on the necessity of reforming permitting procedures. "Absolutely, we have a real opportunity to undertake some fundamental review and reform of the NEPA process," he remarked.
In response to Senator Moran's emphasis on a skilled workforce in aviation technology, Bradbury discussed the critical need for staying current with technological advancements in aviation. "We need the latest tools; we need the latest data," he noted.
Lastly, responding to Senator Moreno's question about regulatory impacts on automobile affordability, Bradbury recognized that regulations can increase costs passed down to consumers but stressed their importance for safety. "Affordability isn't just an economic issue; it's a safety issue too," he commented.
Bradbury has garnered support from over 20 organizations within the transportation sector.
