U.S. Senator Ted Cruz has introduced the Education Freedom Scholarships and Opportunity Act, a bill aimed at expanding educational options through federal tax credits for donations to nonprofit scholarship funds. The legislation is designed to provide individuals and businesses with incentives to contribute to scholarships that support students' education.

Senator Cruz emphasized the importance of equal access to quality education: “Every child deserves the chance to succeed. The Education Freedom Scholarships and Opportunity Act ensures students have access to quality education regardless of their income or background. This legislation will empower families and foster private investment through a dollar-for-dollar tax credit, expanding opportunities for all American students.”

The bill has also gained support from Senator James Lankford, who serves as a cosponsor.

Since 2019, Senator Cruz has been advocating for expanded educational options. He previously introduced similar legislation in 2021 and 2023.

Key elements of the Education Freedom Scholarships and Opportunity Act include encouraging states to participate in the scholarship program while maintaining control over its implementation. States can decide on eligibility criteria for students, define eligible educational expenses, and choose qualified educational providers.

The bill also supports workplace training education by allowing scholarships for career and technical education, apprenticeships, certifications, and other workforce training forms for postsecondary students.

The act prohibits any increase in federal regulation or control over participating educational providers or organizations involved in granting scholarships or workforce training. It aims to assist low- and middle-income students who struggle with tuition fees or lack resources for necessary workforce training.
