U.S. Senator John Cornyn from Texas has joined forces with Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee and 29 other Senate Republicans to introduce a resolution recognizing "American Girls in Sports Day" on October 10. This initiative aims to honor the contributions of female athletes across the United States.
Senator Cornyn expressed his support for the resolution, stating, “I’m proud to cosponsor this resolution to recognize Oct. 10 as American Girls in Sports Day and honor the contributions of female athletes. We must protect the integrity of women’s sports and continue to provide opportunities for fair competition.”
The resolution highlights several key points about the importance of athletic participation for young girls, noting its positive impact on their physical health, self-confidence, and discipline. It acknowledges the significant achievements of women in sports history and their role as inspirations for future generations.
A pivotal element mentioned in the resolution is Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which has played a crucial role in supporting girls in sports. However, it raises concerns about recent moves by the Biden Administration that are perceived as threats to these protections.
The document also addresses issues related to biological differences between men and women in sports competitions. It mentions an increase in biological men competing in women's sports, resulting in what some see as unfair displacement of female athletes from titles and scholarships.
In response to these concerns, organizations like the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) have implemented policies ensuring that only student-athletes whose biological sex is female can compete on NAIA-sponsored women's teams.
The resolution calls for safeguarding opportunities for women and girls to compete athletically and urges sports-governing bodies both domestically and internationally to protect biological females' rights within sports.
Alongside Senators Cornyn and Blackburn, several other senators have backed this initiative, including Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), James Lankford (R-OK), Ron Johnson (R-WI), John Hoeven (R-ND), Jim Risch (R-ID), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Tom Cotton (R-AR), Joni Ernst (R-IA), John Barrasso (R-WY), Eric Schmitt (R-MO), Roger Wicker (R-MS), Bill Cassidy (R-LA.), Katie Britt (R-AL), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Roger Marshall (R-KS), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), Steve Daines (R-MT), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Tommy Tuberville(R-AL ), Tim Sheehy(R-MT ), Dan Sullivan(R-AK ), Deb Fischer(R-NE ), Thom Tillis(R-NC ), Pete Ricketts(R-NE ), Mike Lee(R-UT ), and Jim Banks(R-IN ).
