WASHINGTON – During a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, U.S. Senator John Cornyn engaged in a discussion with U.S. Representative Elise Stefanik regarding her nomination as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations under the Trump administration. The conversation focused on reestablishing deterrence on the global stage following what was described as former President Biden's record of weakness.
Senator Cornyn expressed his support for Stefanik's nomination and questioned her on policy matters concerning Russian President Vladimir Putin. In response, Stefanik highlighted what she viewed as the successes of President Trump's first term, noting that "He is the only modern president where Putin did not invade another country," attributing this to Trump's leadership.
Stefanik criticized former President Joe Biden's approach, stating, "We did not see that with our previous president in President Joe Biden, and I think the catastrophic withdrawal led to this cascading of weakness around the globe."
Cornyn further questioned whether diplomacy can be effective without deterrence. Stefanik emphasized her belief in deterrence as essential for peace, citing her role in rebuilding the U.S. military during Trump's first term: "Deterrence is our strongest way to ensure that we have peace."
