AUSTIN – U.S. Senator John Cornyn has issued a statement regarding the release of Mark Swidan, a resident of Houston, from a Chinese prison. Swidan had been detained for 12 years.

"After 12 long years of unjust imprisonment, Houstonian Mark Swidan is finally free," stated Sen. Cornyn. He described the conditions and treatment Swidan endured as "unimaginable" and criticized the Chinese Communist Party for its disregard for human rights.

Senator Cornyn expressed his joy at Swidan's return home and called on the State Department to continue efforts to secure the release of Austin Tice, another Texan who remains detained.
