U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Cory Booker have announced the Senate's passage of their Strengthening Child Exploitation Enforcement Act. This legislation aims to address gaps in existing laws related to child sexual abuse, enhancing law enforcement's ability to prosecute offenders and protect victims.
Senator Cornyn stated, "Perpetrators who attack our children must face consequences for their heinous actions." He emphasized that the bill would close legal loopholes, ensuring offenders are held accountable without escaping on technicalities.
Senator Booker expressed pride in the bipartisan effort, saying, "This critical legislation—which ensures that those who exploit and sexually abuse children are held accountable—has passed the Senate." He highlighted the shared commitment to improving laws for better child protection and justice for victims.
The companion legislation is being led in the House by Representatives Troy Nehls and Madeleine Dean.
The U.S. Department of Justice published recommendations in 2023 through its National Strategy for Child Exploitation Prevention and Interdiction. The Strengthening Child Exploitation Enforcement Act incorporates these suggestions by clarifying definitions around kidnapping, international travel related to abuse, sexual contact crimes involving children, and attempts at such offenses.
Several organizations support this act, including the Association of State Criminal Investigative Agencies, Major County Sheriff's of America, Rights4Girls, Hope for Justice, Street Grace, 3Strands Global Foundation, Fraternal Order of Police, National Children’s Alliance (NCA), and National District Attorney’s Association (NDAA).
