Governor Greg Abbott of Texas recently hosted a meeting with the Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tobias Billström, at the Governor’s Mansion in Austin. The discussion revolved around enhancing the international economic partnership between Texas and Sweden. This marks Minister Billström's first official visit to Texas and his inaugural meeting with Governor Abbott.
The leaders explored shared economic interests between Texas and Sweden, focusing on advancements in aerospace, energy, and advanced manufacturing industries. They also emphasized the significance of strengthening the economic alliance between the United States and Sweden to bolster national security interests in both nations.
Furthermore, Governor Abbott and Minister Billström discussed potential collaborations within the space industry. Governor Abbott highlighted Texas' robust aerospace industry, home to leading businesses such as NASA, Space X, Blue Origin, and Firefly. Minister Billström expressed interest in the Texas Space Commission, emphasizing how Texas' historic investment in aerospace presents an opportunity for both regions to expand their partnership within this crucial industry. They also considered possible collaborative efforts such as sharing expertise, conducting joint research initiatives, and contributing to international space exploration missions.
Over the past decade, Swedish companies have made significant investments in Texas. These 26 foreign direct investment projects have generated $994 million in capital expenditures and created nearly 2,400 jobs within the state. In 2023 alone, total trade between Texas and Sweden amounted to $2.9 billion.
