Freeman F. Martin has officially taken command of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) at a ceremony held in Austin. Martin, the first Texas Ranger to lead the department, was appointed as DPS' 14th Director by the Public Safety Commission (PSC) last month.
The event saw attendance from notable figures including Texas Governor Greg Abbott, PSC Chairman Steven P. Mach, several commissioners, outgoing DPS Director Steven McCraw, and other state officials and DPS personnel.
Governor Abbott praised Martin's extensive experience within the agency: "Freeman Martin brings an extraordinary wealth of experience to this position," he stated. He emphasized Martin's dedication to law enforcement, adding that "what matters even more is what lies in the heart of a leader—and what lies in the heart of Freeman Martin is true dedication to the rule of law."
Chairman Mach echoed these sentiments, highlighting Martin's deep understanding of both the agency and its people: “Today is an exciting day for the state of Texas as we usher in a new era at the Texas Department of Public Safety,” he remarked.
Director Martin addressed the current challenges facing Texas: “Today, Texas faces the most significant public safety and homeland security threats of our entire lifetime,” he said. He expressed gratitude for his appointment and outlined his commitment to enhancing public safety across Texas.
During the ceremony, Governor Abbott administered both the state oath and official DPS Colonel badge to Director Martin. The event also featured a symbolic flag exchange between Chairman Mach, outgoing Director McCraw, and Director Martin.
Freeman F. Martin began his career with DPS in 1990 as a Trooper and rose through various roles over three decades. His previous positions include Senior Deputy Director over Homeland Security at DPS. A native of New Deal, he holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and graduated from Northwestern University's School of Police Staff and Command.
