Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has publicly criticized 39 House Democrats for their opposition to a comprehensive education package proposed by Representative Brad Buckley. The package, which included an additional $6 billion in public school funding, teacher pay raises, and school safety measures, was also designed to expand school choice for all Texan families.

In a letter addressed to the dissenting Democrats, Governor Abbott wrote: “As you surely recall, I worked with Representative Brad Buckley during Special Sessions #3 and #4 last year to design a school choice and public school funding package that would have achieved exactly what you seek.” He continued by noting that the same representatives who signed the letter had voted against the proposed package.

The governor went on to clarify why some public schools are currently facing budget shortfalls. He explained that these schools had received extraordinary federal funding for COVID recovery, which is no longer available. Consequently, those schools that utilized this funding for ongoing expenses are now grappling with a deficit.

Furthermore, Governor Abbott addressed references made to the basic allotment per student. While this figure stands at $6,160, he pointed out that the average funding per student actually exceeds $12,000.

He concluded his letter by stating: “Know this, my commitment to improving public schools is just as resolute as yours. To achieve our shared goal, however, it is incumbent upon you to work with your fellow Texas House members to muster the votes to get it passed—something you were unwilling to do last year.”
