U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) has called on the Biden administration to put an end to its catch-and-release policies at the southern border. Cornyn, along with Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX), John Barrasso (R-WY), Mike Lee (R-UT), and Pete Ricketts (R-NE), recently visited the Rio Grande Valley to assess the situation firsthand.

During his remarks on the Senate floor, Cornyn highlighted the consequences of President Biden's border policies. He expressed concern about the ease with which individuals can enter the country and be released without proper vetting. Cornyn stated, "President Biden’s border policies have made it so that people from anywhere in the world can come to the southern border, say the magic words, and be released into the United States."

Cornyn emphasized the urgency of ending catch and release as a means of deterring illegal immigration. He stressed the need to remove individuals who have no legal basis to remain in the United States. According to Cornyn, "If we’re going to deliver consequences, which means to deter more people from coming, that means ending catch and release – which is the policy of the Biden administration – and removing people who have no legal reason to remain in the United States."

The senator also acknowledged the ongoing crisis at the southern border, referring to it as the "world's worst-kept secret." He highlighted the importance of input from those directly affected by the crisis, expressing gratitude to the individuals in the Rio Grande Valley who shared their perspectives. Cornyn particularly thanked the law enforcement officers who are on the front lines of addressing the situation.

Cornyn underscored the need for effective deterrence to combat the influx of illegal immigration. He noted that simply increasing the number of Border Patrol agents or immigration judges would not be sufficient. Cornyn stated, "As long as a flood of humanity is coming across the border at this pace, it doesn’t matter how many Border Patrol agents or immigration judges we have. It won’t be enough. The only way to address this crisis is by deterring more illegal immigration, and the simplest way to do that is by delivering consequences for entering the country illegally."

As the situation at the southern border continues to be a pressing concern, Senator Cornyn's call to end catch and release echoes the growing call for stronger border security measures. The Biden administration faces mounting pressure to address the crisis and implement effective deterrence strategies to combat illegal immigration.
