Washington, D.C. – On May 25, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin) joined fellow Democrats on the House Floor to demand the Republican majority do their jobs and pay America’s bills.

Watch Rep. Doggett’s Floor speech here.

As of this week, all 213 House Democrats have signed a discharge petition to extend the debt limit without new restrictions, as was previously done multiple times under the former administration.

Days away from a catastrophic default on America’s debt – created by House Republicans – which will cost hardworking families in Austin and across the nation dearly, the House GOP is rushing out of town for the long weekend.

Rep. Doggett’s remarks, as delivered, are below:

The leader they worship, Donald J. Trump, is the “King of Debt” as he described himself. Spellbound, whenever he commands, they would crash our government and default on America.

Never concerned with the soaring Trump debt that they supported. Their sudden interest now in deficit reduction is really about undermining education, health, environmental protections, and social service initiatives that they never supported in the first place.

Their plans are not about debt reduction. It's only about making room for another round of tax cuts they have already scheduled for June to benefit the super-rich, giant multinational corporations, and those who refuse to pay their fair share of our national security and other vital public services.

Don't make Americans pay for Republican hypocrisy.
