Washington, D.C. – On May 16, Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin), a senior member of the Ways and Means Committee and House Budget Committee, issued the following statement after the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released an updated estimate of the 10-year cost for extending the expiring individual provisions of the 2017 Trump-GOP Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which would add about $3 trillion to our Nation’s budget deficit:

“Those who rave about uncontrolled national deficits are now proposing to explode those same deficits by about $3 trillion. Their depletion of revenue by cutting taxes for those at the top has dramatically increased the size of our current national debt. And $3 trillion more in lower revenue will have the same impact on that debt as $3 trillion more in spending. Republicans aren’t offering fiscal sanity, only fiscal hypocrisy. They are only using deficits to attack health care, education, environmental law enforcement, and social service expenditures that they have never supported in the first place.”
