The City of Brenham has been recognized as a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community by Travel Texas in the initial year of the program. This designation signifies Visit Brenham's initiative to enhance tourism, stimulate local job growth, and attract visitors to both Brenham and the broader Texas region.
Governor Greg Abbott commented on the significance of tourism to the state's economy, highlighting its contribution to job creation and financial impact. He stated, "Tourism is critical to our local and state economies, supporting one in 11 jobs across Texas." Governor Abbott also praised Brenham for its achievement and encouraged other Texas communities to seek the same designation to further promote local tourism.
Travel Texas Director Tim Fennell praised Brenham's appeal, noting its blend of natural beauty and cultural attractions. "Rolling hills, historic landmarks, and a thriving small-town cultural scene make Brenham a must-visit destination," he said. Fennell emphasized Brenham's commitment to providing enriching experiences for visitors, citing attractions such as bluebonnet landscapes and the Blue Bell Creameries.
Senator Lois W. Kolkhorst congratulated her hometown on receiving the certification, remarking on Brenham's strategic location and economic contributions. "Located conveniently between Houston and Austin, Brenham boasts a rich tapestry of attractions and experiences that play a vital role in boosting the local economy," she said.
Representative Trey Wharton recognized the community's efforts in promoting tourism while maintaining its heritage. He remarked that the designation highlights Brenham’s excellence in creating a welcoming environment for tourists.
Mayor Atwood Kenjura emphasized the economic importance of tourism to Brenham, stating, "Tourism is a vital economic engine for the City of Brenham, driving significant revenue that supports local businesses, creates jobs, and strengthens our community."
Scott Atwood, the Chair of the Brenham/Washington County Tourism Advisory Board, acknowledged the work of Visit Brenham’s team in achieving the designation. He noted the range of attractions, from ice cream to historical sites, available to visitors.
City of Brenham Tourism & Marketing Director Jennifer Eckermann expressed excitement about the designation's potential effects on their economy. She highlighted that tourism accounts for over $120 million in travel spending and more than 900 jobs throughout the county.
The Tourism Friendly Texas Community program aids local governments and non-profits in leading tourism development, offering benefits like building essential relationships, educating leaders, and identifying strategies.
