Texas State Rep. Shawn Thierry (D-Houston) recently took to the Texas House floor to pay tribute to her father, Frederick, and thank her legislative colleagues for their support during a difficult time in her life.

Rep. Thierry introduced House Resolution 690 to memorialize her father. The Texas House of Representatives adopted the measure on Apr. 23.

"All 150 Members of the House of Representatives today stood with me as my father was honored with a Memorial Resolution," Rep Thierry wrote in an April 26 Facebook post. "I spoke about what an incredible man he was and the disciple, dedication, courage, compassion and class he exemplified."

Born in Louisiana, Frederick Thierry was a married father to the lawmaker and her brother. His loved ones affectionally referred to him as "Boy," with his nieces and nephews having called him "Uncle Boy."

"My Dad led by example," Rep. Thierry said. "I learned the value of  hard work, excellence, and the importance of family and loyalty. I miss him every day but realize that I am blessed be she so many go through life wondering if their father ever loved them. Grateful and humbled to have never had a doubt as to my father’s love and support. Please continue to pray for our family, and especially my devoted mom, Mrs. Joyce Thierry. My parents were married for 57 years."

Thierry's father began his career at the General Motors Company in the field of shipping and receiving. He later started his own successful commercial maintenance company, T & J Janitorial, Inc. While running his business, he also worked for the Harris County Health Department as manager of Logistics, a position he held for over two decades.

"I deeply appreciate my colleagues who stood in sympathy and solidarity with me today to officially salute my outstanding father," Re. Thierry concluded in her statement.

The elder Thierry is survived by his wife of 57 years, his two children, and grandchildren.

Thierry serves Texas House District 146, which covers numerous communities in the Southeast and Southwest parts of greater Houston.

A graduate of Howard University and the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University, she is a practicing attorney and the principal of the Law Offices of Shawn Thierry. She was elected to the state House in 2016.
