On April 10, 2025, Senator John Cornyn from Texas addressed criticism from the media and Democrats regarding the immigration enforcement strategies under the Trump administration. Cornyn emphasized the administration’s focus on reversing the previous administration's policies to enhance homeland security.
“There’s been a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth in the mainstream media about President Trump’s commonsense immigration enforcement agenda,” he stated during his speech. He argued that the strategy is straightforward, not a political conflict, saying, “This isn’t rocket science. This isn’t partisan warfare.”
Cornyn highlighted the priority of keeping criminals and gangs away from communities. “In order to keep the American people safe, we need to keep criminals and gangs off our streets, and that’s exactly what the Trump administration is doing,” he said. He further noted that, of the arrests made under Secretary Noem’s leadership, almost half involved convicted criminals, with a third facing pending charges.
Expressing approval, he stated, “I can’t imagine anyone would be anything except relieved that the Trump administration has prioritized removing these gang members from our country.” Cornyn criticized the previous policies, suggesting they would be recorded as major errors, noting, “Refusing to arrest and lock up criminals who never should have been in the country in the first place will go down in history as one of the biggest mistakes the Biden administration and Democrats have ever made.”
He concluded with support for the current administration, saying, “The Trump administration by contrast… is part of the solution, not part of the problem.”
