Governor Greg Abbott has officially designated April 2025 as Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month in Texas, aligning with World Autism Awareness Day. In highlighting this observance, Governor Abbott noted the importance of fostering an environment conducive to the thriving of individuals across the autism spectrum.
"Texas continues to promote the acceptance and celebration of people with disabilities, including Texans with autism," stated Governor Abbott. He emphasized the need for a support system that enables individuals with autism, like Jeremiah Kimmel, who was acknowledged during the Governor's State of the State Address, to feel included and supported. Abbott further added, "This April, we celebrate neurodiversity and the unique perspectives, abilities, talents, and experiences of Texans who make our state great."
With one in 36 children in the United States diagnosed with autism, the condition is identified as the fastest-growing developmental disorder. Increased acceptance is believed to translate into improved job prospects, enhanced employment opportunities, affordable housing solutions, and transportation systems which cater to diverse needs.
In support of this initiative, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission is organizing the 2025 Texas Autism Conference as a virtual event scheduled from April 14 to 17. Individuals seeking additional information can reach out via Childrens.Autism.Program@hhs.texas.gov.
The Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities remains focused on ensuring that people with disabilities can enjoy lives marked by independence, productivity, and self-determination. The Committee is committed to recommending necessary changes in disability policies, supporting a network of related committees, promoting awareness through awards, and encouraging compliance with disability laws.
