Texas Governor Greg Abbott | Governor Greg Abbott
Governor Greg Abbott announced the closure of a jail booking facility in Jim Hogg County, Texas. The facility, part of Operation Lone Star, was initially opened in 2022 to detain illegal immigrants arrested for border-related crimes. The decision to close it comes as a result of President Donald Trump's actions on border security.
Governor Abbott attributed the closure to the "decisive and swift leadership" of President Trump, which he said has resulted in "historically low illegal immigration." Abbott stated, "Thanks to President Trump, illegal border crossings are at all-time record lows and, unlike under President Joe Biden, the Trump Administration is quickly deporting illegal immigrants from our country."
The state has begun phasing out operations at the facility and plans to close it by April. Texas has also offered the use of the facility to the Trump Administration for its border security efforts.
Abbott emphasized that Texas will continue its cooperation with federal authorities in handling immigration enforcement.
