On March 4, 2025, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) addressed the Senate floor to preview President Trump's upcoming Joint Address to Congress. He highlighted what he described as successful efforts by the administration to curb illegal immigration in the weeks following President Trump's inauguration.
Senator Cornyn expressed anticipation for the address, stating, "I look forward to attending the President’s address, and I am happy to welcome my friend, Abraham George, who will join me as a guest tonight."
He noted that significant progress had been made in border security since President Trump took office. "I’m looking forward to hearing the President discuss tonight the incredible strides his administration has made in just about six weeks since his inauguration," Cornyn remarked.
Cornyn emphasized that these successes were most evident in border security. He stated, "Nowhere is that success more apparent than when it comes to border security. After four years of record highs, CBP is now facing record lows."
The Senator attributed this change partly to deterrence efforts that began even before Trump assumed office. "As soon as President Trump was elected, even before he took office, the migrant flows began to subside—that’s called deterrence," he explained.
Upon taking office, apprehensions reportedly decreased significantly. Cornyn noted, "When President Trump actually took office, apprehensions fell by a staggering 85 percent compared to the same period in 2024."
Cornyn concluded by emphasizing what he sees as a key outcome of Trump's election: "One of the most important consequences of President Trump’s election on November the 5th was we are now re-establishing border security, and the people of this great country are safer for it." He added that migrants understand that under Trump's administration, laws will be enforced: "Migrants know that a Trump administration means our laws will be enforced."
