U.S. Senator John Cornyn has voiced concerns over the Biden administration's recent student loan forgiveness actions, urging the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to investigate what he termed a "scam." Speaking on the Senate floor, Cornyn criticized the decision to cancel additional student loans, arguing that it merely shifts financial responsibility onto taxpayers.
Cornyn stated, “Now this is not really a cancelation of those loans, it’s just a transfer of the responsibility to taxpayers and wiping the slate clean for people who actually agreed to borrow this money.” He further accused the administration of ignoring Supreme Court rulings and issuing "a blank check after blank check" to borrowers.
Highlighting his disapproval of what he called "student loan socialism," Cornyn suggested that DOGE, led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, should scrutinize the policy. He argued that it is inefficient and unfair to require taxpayers who did not attend college to fund those who did.
In addressing college affordability, Cornyn concluded, “If we want to address the affordability of college—an important topic—widespread student loan socialism is not the way to do it.”
