U.S. Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, both representing Texas, have announced the passage of a provision in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) aimed at enhancing educational facilities for children of military families. The legislation mandates the Department of Defense (DoD) to update its assessment of schools on military bases, allowing temporary housing schools to be considered for permanent status.

Senator Cruz emphasized the significance of this development for Laughlin Air Force Base's Roberto Barrera Elementary STEM Magnet School. "This provision paves the way for Laughlin Air Force Base's Roberto Barrera Elementary STEM Magnet School to be assessed, ranked, and considered for future construction funding," he stated. He highlighted that this initiative is crucial for the Del Rio and Laughlin Air Force Base community and expressed his pride in supporting educational opportunities for servicemembers' children.

Senator Cornyn also expressed his support, highlighting another legislative effort related to honoring military service. "I am proud to champion legislation alongside Senator Cruz to designate the post office in Bastrop, Texas, after Sergeant Major Waugh," Cornyn said. He noted that this bill is a step closer to renaming the facility in honor of Waugh, a decorated combat veteran with an extensive service record.

The DoD Education Activity (DoDEA), responsible for operating 160 schools across various locations including foreign countries and U.S. territories, will conduct a study on these institutions' conditions and capacities as directed by this new legislation.
