U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, representing Texas and serving as the Ranking Member of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, received recognition from the city of Laredo for his efforts in improving infrastructure in South Texas. He was awarded the Key to the City for his role in facilitating presidential permits necessary for constructing and expanding four international bridges in the region.

During the ceremony, Sen. Cruz expressed his gratitude by stating, "I am honored and humbled to receive the Key to the City—an incredible distinction from an amazing place in Texas." He emphasized his commitment to job creation, particularly for residents of Laredo and South Texas.

Senator Cruz highlighted his collaboration with local leaders including Mayor Treviño and Congressman Henry Cuellar. Together, they worked on overcoming bureaucratic hurdles that delayed these infrastructure projects under the Biden-Harris administration. The senator recounted their success in passing bipartisan legislation through both houses of Congress, which was signed into law last December.

The legislative achievement is part of a provision within the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2024. This provision aims to expedite presidential permits for bridge projects along the Rio Grande across Webb, Cameron, and Maverick Counties by requiring prompt action from both the State Department and White House.

In addition to Senator Cruz's efforts, other Texas lawmakers played key roles in this initiative. These included Senator John Cornyn and Representatives Henry Cuellar, Vicente Gonzalez, Monica de la Cruz, Joaquin Castro, and Tony Gonzales.
