Today, the Department of Transportation announced its intent to award a new nonstop flight route between San Antonio International Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. This decision comes after the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, co-authored by U.S. Senate Commerce Committee Ranking Member Ted Cruz, was signed into law. The act allocated five new round-trip flights between Reagan National and beyond-perimeter locations.
Senator Cruz expressed his satisfaction with the announcement: “I’m proud to have led Republicans and Democrats in delivering a landmark victory not just for the City of San Antonio but the entire Lone Star State." He credited bipartisan efforts and local support for overcoming opposition to secure this new route.
Jesus Saenz, Director of Airports for the San Antonio Airport System, emphasized the long-standing desire for this connection: “The City of San Antonio has been fighting for a direct flight to Washington, D.C. for decades." He praised Senator Cruz and Representatives Chip Roy and Joaquin Castro for their leadership in making it happen.
Jenna Saucedo-Herrera from greater:SATX highlighted the significance of this development: "San Antonio—previously the largest U.S. city without nonstop DCA service—now gains critical access to D.C. and Northern Virginia."
Former U.S. Representative Lamar Smith acknowledged years of effort leading to this result: “This victory is the result of years of hard work and a united effort from countless stakeholders.” He recognized Senator Cruz's role in securing this outcome through the FAA Reauthorization Act.
Wayne Peacock, CEO of USAA, noted the impact on both military personnel and businesses: "Securing direct-service flights will have a significant impact on the military community and their families serving here."
Joe Straus, former Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, pointed out economic benefits: “Nonstop air service to Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) is critical to San Antonio’s economic strength — especially in sectors like cybersecurity, defense contracting, aerospace, and financial services.”
