On May 20, 2024, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) addressed the recent severe storms that wreaked havoc in Houston and eastern Texas. The calamitous weather events brought heavy rains, wind, and flooding, affecting millions of individuals and tragically claiming the lives of eight Texans.

In his remarks on the Senate floor, Senator Cornyn highlighted the uniqueness of these storms compared to previous natural disasters experienced in the region. "Houston and southeast Texas are no strangers to hurricanes and natural disasters, but this was something altogether different," he said.

The storm caused significant damage to homes, businesses, roads, and vehicles. In a somber note, Senator Cornyn stated: "Homes, businesses, roads, and vehicles were damaged by the storms and sadly at least eight Texans have lost their lives."

Despite the devastation wrought by the storms, Texans responded with characteristic resilience. "Texans did as they always do: They immediately mobilized to support those who suffered the worst impact," said Senator Cornyn.

He also recognized crews working tirelessly to clear debris and restore power.

Looking ahead towards recovery efforts from this disaster, Senator Cornyn assured his constituents of his commitment to help affected communities rebuild. "As we move from rescue to recovery efforts," he concluded, "my team and I are prepared to help in any way we can."
