On May 15, 2024, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) took to the floor to commemorate National Police Week, discuss his Back the Blue Act, and applaud law enforcement officers across Texas for their dedication to public safety. Earlier in the day, he met with leaders from the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA) and hosted a bipartisan Law Enforcement Caucus event on recruitment and retention featuring Texas Municipal Police Association President Chris CeBallos and Houston Police Officers Union Vice President Tim Whitaker.

Senator Cornyn began his remarks by acknowledging National Peace Officers Memorial Day, stating, “Today is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, a time to pay tribute to law enforcement officials who made the ultimate sacrifice.” He went on to express gratitude towards those who lost their lives in service of their communities and country.

Cornyn praised America's police officials for consistently going above and beyond the call of duty in various situations such as mental health crises, drug overdoses, medical emergencies or crime incidents. He asserted that these brave individuals not only deserve our appreciation but also our support.

The senator then urged Congress to pass his proposed Back the Blue Act as a demonstration of support for these public servants. The legislation would make it a federal crime to assault a law enforcement officer. Cornyn emphasized that this measure is necessary due to the daily risks these officers face in maintaining community safety. He concluded by expressing gratitude on behalf of Texas towards all those who serve and protect its communities.
