WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has joined Senate Republican colleagues and House impeachment managers in calling for a trial in the Senate to impeach U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas. Sen. Cruz, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on The Constitution, emphasized the importance of following the Constitution during a press conference held in Washington, D.C.
During the press conference, Sen. Cruz highlighted the severity of the situation by stating, "We’ve just witnessed history being made. Only 22 times in our nation’s history has the House of Representatives presented and delivered Articles of Impeachment to the Senate. Only twice in our nation’s history has a cabinet member been impeached by the House." He further accused Mayorkas of aiding and abetting the illegal entry of millions of individuals into the country, calling it a threat to the safety of Americans.
Sen. Cruz also pointed out specific instances where he believes Mayorkas and President Joe Biden failed to uphold the law, resulting in tragic outcomes. He mentioned a case where a criminal illegal alien was released, leading to the death of an individual, emphasizing the need for accountability.
In urging Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to proceed with an impeachment trial, Sen. Cruz emphasized the importance of allowing the House managers to present evidence. He stated, "The Senate has a clear obligation under the Constitution and 200 years of precedent: we need to hold a trial. We need to allow the managers to present the evidence."
The call for an impeachment trial comes amid growing concerns over immigration policies and enforcement under the Biden administration. Sen. Cruz's strong stance on the issue reflects a broader effort within the Republican Party to hold government officials accountable for their actions.
The Senate's decision on whether to proceed with an impeachment trial for Alejandro Mayorkas is yet to be determined, but Sen. Cruz's vocal advocacy signals a contentious debate ahead in the political arena.
