WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) has voiced his concerns regarding the dismissal of the impeachment proceedings against U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, stating that it sets a "dangerous precedent" in the nation's history.

Senator Cornyn emphasized that the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas was not due to popularity or incompetence but for "two serious offenses." He criticized Mayorkas for his "willful and systematic refusal to enforce our immigration laws," making catch-and-release the government's de facto policy, which goes against existing immigration laws.

Additionally, Cornyn pointed out Mayorkas's breach of public trust, citing instances where the Secretary lied under oath to Congress, beyond just misleading statements on news networks.

The Senator expressed his dismay over the Majority Leader's intention to table the impeachment articles and skip a trial, calling it an unprecedented move that would violate the Constitution. He warned that such actions would prevent the Senate from fulfilling its duty to examine evidence, hear witnesses, and allow Senators to vote on guilt or innocence.

Cornyn stressed, "This would be a dangerous precedent to set," highlighting the significance of impeachment as a solemn aspect of democracy that should not be disregarded.

The concerns raised by Senator Cornyn underscore the contentious nature of the impeachment process and the potential implications of bypassing a trial in this case.
