Governor Greg Abbott has declared April 2024 as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month in Texas. In his proclamation, Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of supporting survivors and preventing sexual violence in the state. According to the Governor, "Texas stands with survivors of sexual assault and will work to bring justice and support for victims of this heinous crime."
Rose Luna, CEO of the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault, also expressed admiration for the survivors of sexual assault and acknowledged the dedication of the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Task Force in prioritizing survivor voices. Luna stated, “We commend the bravery and resilience of survivors, whose strength shines through every day, and applaud the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Task Force for their unwavering commitment to centering survivor voices.”
The Governor’s Sexual Assault Survivors’ Task Force, established in 2019, plays a crucial role in providing a survivor-centered and trauma-informed response to sexual violence in Texas. This task force brings together professionals and survivors dedicated to implementing essential system improvements to support all survivors of sexual assault in the state.
Texans are encouraged to show their support for survivors during Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month by using the hashtag #TXSexualAssaultAwarenessMonth on social media. Additionally, resources for survivors published by the SASTF can be accessed on the official website of the Governor of Texas.
As the state continues its mission to promote healing and empowerment for survivors of sexual violence, Governor Abbott's proclamation marks a significant step in raising awareness and fostering a safer environment for all Texans.
