Governor Abbott Renews Border Security Disaster Declaration In March 2024

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has renewed the border security disaster declaration in the state, citing the ongoing and imminent threat posed by individuals unlawfully crossing the Texas-Mexico border. The proclamation, originally issued on May 31, 2021, has been renewed to address the surge of individuals crossing the border, affecting numerous Texas counties and state agencies.

Governor Abbott stated, "WHEREAS, I, Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas, issued a disaster proclamation on May 31, 2021..." reaffirming the need for continued vigilance in addressing the border security challenges faced by the state. He further declared, "NOW, THEREFORE, in accordance with the authority vested in me by Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code, I do hereby renew the aforementioned proclamation..." emphasizing the critical nature of the situation.

The renewed disaster declaration encompasses a wide range of counties, including Aransas, Atascosa, Bee, Brewster, Brooks, and many more, along with all state agencies impacted by the ongoing crisis. Governor Abbott affirmed that all orders and directives from the original proclamation remain in effect to address the persisting threat at the border.

The proclamation was officially signed by Governor Abbott on March 17, 2024, with Deputy Secretary of State David Nelson attesting to its validity. Governor Abbott expressed his commitment to ensuring the safety and security of Texas residents in the face of the continuing challenges at the border.
