On January 31, 2024, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) raised concerns about the access and data sharing practices of the popular social media app TikTok during a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee. In his questioning of TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew, Senator Cornyn focused on two key issues: the difference in access to TikTok for children under 13 in different countries and the alleged sharing of user data with TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance.
Senator Cornyn first addressed the issue of child permissions on TikTok. He asked Chew about the access his own children have to the app in Singapore, where Chew resides. Senator Cornyn inquired, "Do your children have access to TikTok in Singapore?" Chew responded, "If they lived in the United States, I would give them access to our 'under-13' experience. My children are below the age of 13." Chew further clarified that TikTok does not have an "under-13" experience in Singapore, but the feature is available in the United States.
Moving on to the issue of data sharing, Senator Cornyn referred to a recent Wall Street Journal article that contradicted TikTok's public statements. The article claimed that user data, including emails, birth dates, and IP addresses, continues to be shared with ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok. Senator Cornyn asked Chew whether the company would conduct an investigation into the allegations made in the article.
Chew responded by stating that TikTok takes these allegations seriously and is committed to ensuring the security of user data. He explained that TikTok undergoes ongoing security inspections by both internal personnel and third-party experts to maintain a rigorous and robust system. Chew acknowledged that no system is perfect but emphasized the importance of continuous improvement and testing to prevent any breaches. He also noted that if any violations of TikTok's policies occur within the organization, disciplinary action will be taken against the individuals responsible.
The hearing highlighted the growing concerns about child safety and data privacy on social media platforms. Senator Cornyn's questioning shed light on the disparities in child permissions on TikTok across different countries and raised valid concerns about the alleged sharing of user data with ByteDance. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew's responses emphasized the company's commitment to improving security measures and taking action against any policy violations.
As the debate surrounding the regulation of social media platforms continues, it is clear that issues of child safety and data privacy remain a top priority for lawmakers and users alike.
