U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) announced today that he and Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) will be leading a group of Senate Republicans on a visit to the Rio Grande Valley this week. This visit comes as they discuss the border-related provisions in President Biden’s emergency supplemental funding request.
Senator Cornyn expressed his opinion on President Biden's funding request, stating, "While I’m glad President Biden seems to have awakened to the fact that the status quo at the border is unsustainable, his emergency funding request shows he’s still absolutely disinterested in solving this crisis." He further criticized the proposal, saying, "This is not a serious proposal. Some of the proposed spending is actually harmful and the positive aspects are just 'window dressing.'"
Emphasizing the need for real changes to address the border crisis, Senator Cornyn highlighted the upcoming visit to the Rio Grande Valley. He mentioned that Senators Ricketts, Lee, and Barrasso will join him and Senator Cruz on this trip. The purpose of the visit is to engage with Border Patrol agents and Customs officers who experience the consequences of the administration's failed policies on a daily basis.
During the visit, the senators will tour the border to witness firsthand how individuals ranging from vulnerable migrant children to dangerous drug cartel members and even those on the terrorist watch list are able to enter the United States. They will also meet with state officials, local law enforcement, and landowners to understand the broader impact of the border crisis on communities across Texas.
Senator Cornyn stressed the importance of hearing from frontline experts who have valuable insights into the crisis and potential solutions. He stated, "There couldn't be a more important time to hear from the frontline experts who know about this crisis and how to solve it better than anyone else."
As the senators prepare for their border trip, they aim to gather crucial information and insights that will contribute to finding effective solutions to address the ongoing border crisis.
