Washington, D.C. – On June 30, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin) released the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled, in a 6 to 3 decision, to strike down President Biden’s plan to deliver student debt relief:

“Today’s decision follows House Republicans’ recent vote to overturn President Biden’s student-debt relief program. It makes the work for those of us trying to make higher education more affordable that much more urgent. Crushing debt is crushing the future of those trying to buy a home, start a family or save for retirement. This decision will not deter our efforts to overcome GOP obstruction and make higher education more affordable while providing relief to Americans as they continue to bounce back from the pandemic.”

Background:

In April, Rep. Doggett introduced the bipartisan Tax Free Pell Grants Act, which would expand the usage of Pell Grants on a tax-free basis and improve coordination with the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) to ensure that students do not lose out on any AOTC benefits. He most recently sponsored The Student Loan Refinancing Act, which creates a pathway for federal student loan holders to refinance their loans to make them more affordable without jeopardizing other repayment plans and assistance programs.
