The Central Texas Food Bank has received a $25 million donation from The Greater Austin Merchants Cooperative Association (GAMA).
The donation, which was announced April 20, will provide 200,000 meals to residents in Central Texas who are facing financial crisis and troubles getting food due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"So many of our customers and their families have been affected by this pandemic," GAMA's Chief Operating Officer Shane Walker said, reported by Patch. "People need help now more than ever and are having to make hard decisions for their families while dealing with the loss of income. GAMA is very pleased to be able to assist the Central Texas Food Bank and the good work they do in our community."
More than 43 million meals were provided by the Central Texas Food Bank in 2019. These meals were made available by different mobile food pantries and partner agencies in Central Texas. The $25 million from GAMA will help to feed one in seven people in Central Texas, or one in five children.
