Governor Greg Abbott has announced that Kilgore has been designated as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community by the Texas Music Office (TMO). This designation follows Kilgore's completion of a multi-step certification process. The Music Friendly Texas program, initiated by TMO in 2016, aims to promote economic development and job creation within the music industry across Texas.

“Congratulations to the City of Kilgore on earning the Music Friendly Texas Certified Community designation,” stated Governor Abbott. He emphasized the importance of music to Texas' cultural identity and its role in local economic growth. “In fact, with support from the Texas Music Office, the Texas music industry accounts for 196,000 direct and indirect permanent jobs and generates over $31.7 billion in annual economic activity statewide.”

Representative Jay Dean highlighted Kilgore's musical heritage: “From its historic stages to the talented artists who have called Kilgore home, music is woven into the city's identity.” Mayor Ronnie Spradlin added that notable figures such as Van Cliburn and Will Jennings are part of this legacy. "Elvis performed here twice before he became a household name," Spradlin noted.

Interim City Manager Rachel Rowe remarked on Kilgore’s diverse musical roots spanning classical, country, and blues genres. Visit Kilgore Tourism Manager Megan Payne sees this recognition as an opportunity for both community engagement and tourism: “This recognition showcases the vibrant music scene we have here.”

The official certification ceremony will take place on March 11 during a City Council meeting in Kilgore. Gini Mascorro from TMO will present the designation at this event.

Kilgore now joins 76 other communities in receiving this certification. The TMO operates under Governor Abbott's Economic Development & Tourism Office and has been active since 1990, supporting various facets of the state's music industry.
