In a Senate Commerce Committee nominations hearing, Senator Ted Cruz underscored the significance of technological innovation for maintaining the United States' economic leadership. The hearing was convened to consider Michael Kratsios as Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and Mark Meador for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Senator Cruz highlighted Kratsios's prior role as U.S. Chief Technology Officer at OSTP, where he contributed to advancing technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and 5G. "The story of the twenty-first century will be written by whichever nation can innovate the fastest," Cruz stated.

Cruz emphasized that emerging technologies are crucial for sustaining America's position as a global economic leader. He mentioned advancements like the Majorana 1 quantum chip, which he said could transform industries from healthcare to energy.

On Meador's nomination to the FTC, Cruz expressed confidence in his understanding of competition law and consumer protection. He voiced concerns about recent FTC actions under Lina Khan's leadership, citing abuses such as targeting political opponents and exceeding legal mandates.

"I think Chairman Andrew Ferguson will restore the FTC’s integrity and focus," Cruz remarked. He expressed hope that Meador would contribute positively to this effort.

The senator concluded by expressing eagerness to hear from both nominees about their plans for advancing their respective institutions' goals.
