Governor Greg Abbott has announced that Killeen is now a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community. This designation, granted by the Texas Music Office (TMO), follows a multi-step certification process aimed at fostering economic development and job creation through music-related activities.
“Congratulations to the City of Killeen on earning the Music Friendly Texas Certified Community designation,” said Governor Abbott. He emphasized the role of music in Texas' cultural traditions and its contribution to economic growth, noting that "the Texas music industry accounts for 196,000 direct and indirect permanent jobs and generates over $31.7 billion in annual economic activity statewide."
Representative Brad Buckley highlighted Killeen's diverse community, stating, “Being named a Music Friendly Texas Community will allow the city to share their musical gifts with so many across the state and nation.”
Representative Hillary Hickland expressed pride in Killeen becoming the 74th such community in Texas. She remarked on music's role in uniting communities and its potential for sustaining traditions and creating jobs.
Killeen Mayor Pro Tem Jessica Gonzalez celebrated this recognition as a reflection of the city's cultural diversity and artistic creativity. “Together, we are amplifying the rhythm of progress and opportunity for the City of Killeen,” she said.
Jovino Gutierrez, a member of the Killeen Music Friendly Texas Committee, shared his vision: “A city that sings and dances together stays together.” He sees this designation as an opportunity to attract national performers to Killeen.
Antonio Noriega, another committee member, described achieving this certification as fulfilling a lifelong dream to support local music.
The official certification ceremony will take place on February 22 during the Motown in Downtown Music Festival in Killeen. TMO’s Gini Mascorro will present the designation at this event.
Killeen is now part of an extensive network within TMO's program which began in 2016. The initiative aims to boost local economies by supporting musicians and attracting industry talent statewide.
