Governor Greg Abbott has instructed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to mobilize state emergency response resources in anticipation of severe weather and wildfire threats expected this weekend. The forecast includes damaging wind gusts, potential tornadoes, and heavy rainfall in East Texas, alongside a critical wildfire risk in West Texas.

"Texas stands ready to support our local communities in East and West Texas as they brace for severe weather this weekend," stated Governor Abbott. He emphasized the importance of monitoring weather conditions, following local officials' guidance, and having an emergency plan. "I thank all of our emergency management personnel and first responders across the state who are protecting their fellow Texans this President’s Day weekend."

The National Weather Service warns that eastern parts of Texas could experience severe storms with damaging winds, possible tornadoes, large hail, and heavy rain leading to flash flooding. In West Texas, gusty winds combined with low humidity heighten the wildfire danger. Additionally, an arctic cold front is expected to bring sub-freezing temperatures statewide next week.

In response to these threats, TDEM has activated several resources:

- **Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service**: Swiftwater Rescue Boat Squads for flood rescues.

- **Texas A&M Forest Service**: Firefighters and equipment including fire engines and federally-contracted firefighting aircraft.

- **Texas Department of State Health Services**: Wildfire Support Packages with medics and ambulances.

Additional resources on standby include:

- **Texas Department of State Health Services**: Severe Weather Packages.

- **Texas Parks and Wildlife Department**: Game Wardens and rescue teams.

- **Texas Department of Public Safety**: Helicopters with hoist capabilities.

- **Texas A&M AgriLife Extension**: Disaster Assessment Agents.

- **Texas Department of Transportation**: High-profile vehicles for road monitoring.

- **Public Utility Commission of Texas**: Power outage coordination.

- **Railroad Commission of Texas**: Monitoring natural gas supply.

- **Texas Commission on Environmental Quality**: Air/water/wastewater monitoring.

Texans are advised to heed local instructions, prepare an emergency plan, gather supplies for an emergency kit, visit relevant websites for safety tips and updates on road conditions or flood information.
