U.S. Senator Ted Cruz has introduced the Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act, aimed at enhancing protection for Border Patrol agents, local law enforcement, and border communities. The legislation makes it a criminal offense to flee from agents or officers during their duties. It is named after Border Patrol Agent Raul Gonzalez, Jr., who lost his life while pursuing individuals near Mission, Texas.

Senator Cruz emphasized the importance of this bill in honoring Agent Gonzalez's sacrifice. "This legislation honors the sacrifice of Agent Raul Gonzalez, Jr., who lost his life pursuing individuals evading capture. It sends a clear message that if you endanger American lives, you will face serious consequences," he stated.

The bill has garnered support from several Republican senators including Tim Sheehy of Montana, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Katie Britt of Alabama, Kevin Cramer of North Dakota, Jim Justice of West Virginia, Ted Budd of North Carolina, and Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi.

In parallel with Sen. Cruz's efforts in the Senate, U.S. Representative Juan Ciscomani introduced companion legislation in the House which has already passed.

Background information reveals that on December 7th, 2022, Agent Gonzalez died when his ATV crashed as he pursued illegal aliens fleeing capture. He had served honorably for over ten years.

The proposed act would permanently bar any illegal alien fleeing from Border Patrol from obtaining legal immigration status in the U.S., impose up to two years' imprisonment for fleeing from law enforcement assisting Border Patrol and increase penalties if injury or death occurs during such pursuits.

Additionally, it mandates that the Department of Justice report to Congress on prosecution frequencies under this act.

In further tribute to Agent Gonzalez's service and dedication, Senator Cruz alongside Senator John Cornyn and Congresswoman De La Cruz have also moved to name a post office after him in McAllen, Texas.

The National Border Patrol Council has expressed its endorsement for the legislation.
