In a recent Senate Commerce Committee executive session, Chairman Ted Cruz (R-Texas) emphasized the importance of advancing bipartisan legislation and urged support for Howard Lutnick's nomination as U.S. Secretary of Commerce. Cruz highlighted Lutnick's leadership experience as crucial for driving economic growth and maintaining America's global competitiveness.

Cruz addressed several pieces of bipartisan legislation aimed at enhancing online safety for children, preserving AM radio in new vehicles, improving wildfire forecasting methods, and combating illegal fishing operations.

Reflecting on a recent mid-air collision over the Potomac, Cruz expressed sympathy for the families affected by the tragedy. He compared this to Lutnick's own experiences during 9/11, underscoring his ability to face challenges. "Mr. Lutnick knows the kind of pain victims’ families are facing," Cruz stated.

Lutnick is expected to direct the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to reissue a biological opinion for offshore operations in the Gulf by May 21st. Cruz noted that Lutnick would take time to understand the complexities of his role at the Commerce Department.

The session also focused on several legislative initiatives led by Cruz. The Kids Off Social Media Act aims to protect children from harmful content online by keeping those under 13 off social media platforms and removing distractions from schools. The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act seeks to preserve AM radio as a critical communication tool during emergencies.

Cruz co-sponsored the Fire Ready Nation Act with Senators Cantwell and Sheehy to improve wildfire forecasts through NOAA's Fire Weather Services program. Additionally, he worked with Senator Schatz on the Illegal Red Snapper and Tuna Enforcement Act to combat poaching activities that fund illicit operations.

Cruz called on his colleagues to support these bills and Lutnick’s confirmation, anticipating strong bipartisan backing.
