U.S. Senator Ted Cruz from Texas, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has collaborated with Senator Ted Budd of North Carolina to propose the Protect Our Law Enforcement with Immigration Control and Enforcement (POLICE) Act of 2025. This legislative initiative aims to amend federal law by categorizing assaults on law enforcement officers, firefighters, or other first responders as deportable offenses.
Senator Cruz emphasized the importance of accountability for those who commit such violent acts, stating, "When illegal aliens commit violent crimes against a law enforcement officer, firefighter, or first responder, they must be held fully accountable and be swiftly deported. I am proud to join Senator Budd and my colleagues in introducing commonsense legislation to ensure that this becomes law."
The bill is backed by several co-sponsors: Senators Thom Tillis (North Carolina), Steve Daines (Montana), Katie Britt (Alabama), Eric Schmitt (Missouri), Bill Hagerty (Tennessee), James Lankford (Oklahoma), Roger Marshall (Kansas), Cindy Hyde-Smith (Mississippi), Kevin Cramer (North Dakota), Jim Justice (West Virginia), and Tim Sheehy (Montana).
In the House of Representatives, Representative Andrew Garbarino from New York's 2nd District has introduced companion legislation.
