Today, U.S. Senator John Cornyn appeared on Fox News' "The Story with Martha MacCallum" to discuss the Biden-Harris administration's decision to sell unused border wall materials and President-Elect Trump's plan regarding deportation of criminals in the country illegally.
Cornyn criticized the administration's auction of border wall materials, stating, "It’s outrageous, of course. And it seems like the Biden administration not only is determined to destroy our country by opening our borders to anybody and everybody who wants to come across, but positively make it easier for them to get here." He expressed concerns about the long-term effects of what he described as an uncontrolled border policy: "I think we’re going to be paying the price for decades to come from this uncontrolled border policy of the previous administration."
Looking ahead to January 20, Cornyn said he anticipates changes with President Trump taking office: "I’m looking forward to January 20, when President Trump begins to enforce the laws that are already in place that Joe Biden refuses to enforce."
Discussing President-Elect Trump's deportation plan, Cornyn highlighted what he sees as a fundamental issue with current policies: "Catch-and-release is the basic policy flaw of the Biden administration because if you release people into the interior of the country, they’re going to just keep coming. More will keep coming because they know they’ll be able to successfully get into the United States and be able to stay."
He emphasized the importance of detention in immigration enforcement: "Detaining is really important and, of course, the Biden administration has reduced the capacity of our ability to detain individuals dramatically." According to Cornyn, Trump's approach is already having an impact: "Because of President Trump’s threat of mass deportation, it’s already deterred migrants from coming to the United States in the first place." He concluded by stressing that enforcement involves more than just catching and detaining individuals: "So this isn’t just about enforcing the law, about catching and detaining people—this is about consequences, and it’s beginning to work."
